Legendary battle rapper Tech 9, real name Akeem Mickens, has died, according to reports that started circulating early Monday Morning (March 25th.) (Tech 9 is not to be confused with independent rap legend Tech N9ne.) While not a lot of details have surfaced yet around the Philly legend, friend and fellow battle rapper Buttah From The Block revealed the news on his Facebook page:
For more than a decade Tech9 has been a battle rap staple and a crowd favorite, delivery aggressive wordplay couple with funny lines and comedic timing layered on top. Some of his most classic battles include his bouts with Arsenal, DNA, Midwest Miles, and more. Not only did he have multiple classics, but they also occurred in numerous battles leagues which included from Lionz Den to Street Arena to Ultimate Rap League.
Being very opinionated outside of battling lead to him becoming a well-known battle rap commentator for Champion.
This is no small loss to the battle rap community, and numerous rappers even outside of battle rap took to social media give their condolences. This included Kendrick Lamar, Lupe Fiasco, Joe Budden and Denzel Curry.
