In case you were living under a rock the past 48 hours, Drake broke the internet with his highly memed music video for “Hotline Bling.” Minutes after the video premiered, hundreds of memes, tweets and dubbed videos flooded the interwebs, this one in particular was extremely funny.
Along with the trending video of the smash single came a “Cha Cha” vs “Hotline Bling” comparison that was also sparked because of their obvious similarities. Coincidentally, D.R.A.M. who released Cha Cha first, was in Toronto for his first ever performance north of the border and embraced the Canadian fans initially.
That’s until his timeline was flooded with topic of Cha Cha vs Hotline Bling, to which he responded with frustration.
Drake is obviously aware of the debate and decided to weigh in via a Fader Magazine interview.
“You know, like in Jamaica, you’ll have a riddim and it’s like, everyone has to do a song on that. Imagine that in rap, or imagine that in R&B. Imagine if we got one beat and every single person—me, this guy, this guy, all these guys—had to do a song on that one beat. So sometimes I’ll pick a beat that’s a bit, like, sunnier, I guess is the word you used, than usual, and I just try my hand at it. And that’s kind of what ‘Hotline Bling’ was. And I loved it. It’s cool. I’ve been excited by that sort of creative process.”
That was a brilliant curve Drizzy, a real slick round-about way of saying you stole it, but not really because you know, that’s how it’s done in Jamaica.
Wait….What?
