It’s in no way shape or form a stretch to say Kendrick Lamar’s pending sophomore album is the most anticipated project of the past 3 years. We’ve all been waiting patiently for Kendrick since he set the world on fire with his now classic Good Kid, M.A.A.D City major debut.
The upcoming album is titled “To Pimp A Butterfly” and you can view the artwork above.
The lead up to this album’s not yet to be announced release date has been very secretive and unusual.
The singles that have been released so far are months a part and their subject matter appear to be random, similar to what happened with the debut project singles right up until you heard the entire album…..Then it all made sense.
His non-album single “I” which was released September of last year has already won Grammys, and the song has received critical acclaim from music critics.
The track was placed at number ten on Rolling Stone?’?s 50 Best Songs of 2014 list. Billboard listed “i” as the second best song of 2014.
“i” also was placed at number 14 on Spin’s list of “The 101 Best Songs of 2014”. In January 2015, “i” was ranked at number five on The Village Voice ?’?s annual year-end Pazz & Jop critics’ poll.
Almost 6 months later, Kendrick releases Blacker The Berry during Black History month. It’s the first official single from imminent To Pimp A Butterfly project.
It’s a racially-charged song, noted for being a departure from the “self-love-promoting” “i” and a more more aggressive record all-together.
The single has really set the tone for what we’re to expect from a sophomore album from one of the best MCs of this era.
